Sunflower Class

Welcome to Sunflower Class!

There are ten children in Sunflower Class, eight boys and two girls. Our class is based at Brooklands Wray Park site. In Sunflowers we are supported by a teacher (Abbie), a developing teacher (Alice), a lead teaching assistant (Gemma) and a mixture of full and part time TA's (Emma, Mandy, Becca, Camilla and Becky) who all help us to learn and grow!

We follow the Brooklands yellow curriculum which you can read about on the "Yellow curriculum" page. Within Sunflower class we have a high level of therapeutic input blended into our learning, which tends to involve a high level of sensory exploration and skill development. We are regularly supported by the physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists as well as the nursing team. The therapists often show adults supporting in Sunflowers how to deliver therapeutic input and programmes which are then delivered to us as part of our learning, and are always on hand to offer additional support as and when needed by the class team.

Sunflower class is a very fun place to be! We really enjoy learning activities and developing our understanding of the world around us. We particularly enjoy physical activities such as swimming, softplay and spending time outside in the sensory garden or playground. Some of our favourite activities include sensory stories, Attention Autism, music & singing and sensory exploration/tactile play. If you'd like to see what a typical week in Sunflower class looks like please see our timetable below.

In Sunflower class we are always working hard to develop our communciation skills. We use a total communication approach and communicate in lots of different ways including using high-tech ACC, symbols, ALDs, Makaton signing, communication books, on-body signing, objects of reference, switches, body language and our voices.

As a class, we are working really hard to develop our independence skills e.g., through weekly cooking sessions, extending our attention and engagement skills e.g., through irresistible input sessions and further develop our social interaction skills, particularly focusing on turn taking with each other.
