In Cherry class we have 10 children with a varied range of learning needs. The children are all reception aged children, typically four or five.
We follow the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and adapt it to the individual needs of each child, as well as incorporating the Early Years Red curriculum of Brooklands school.
At this early developmental stage of the children’s learning, it is important to nurture their play, preferences and choices therefore we use a balance of both child-initiated and adult-directed learning opportunities.
We use a range of total communication methods to support both our verbal and non-verbal learners. He support the children by using simple and clear speech alongside intensive interaction, objects of reference, PECs, ALD boards and Makaton signing.
The children in Cherry class follow a predictable, consistent approach to learning with activities that have a clear beginning and end. The children are supported with a visual timetable to support their learning and support their anxieties.
Staff nurture and facilitate the child’s desire to learn through play. Throughout the day there are lots of opportunities for short attention and listening group activities that promote; social enjoyment, creativity, engagement and anticipation. We incorporate lots of sensory exploration, sensory stories and songs within our day in Cherry class.
In Cherry class, we have 1 Teacher, 1 LTA, 3 TA’s and 1 Midday supervisor.
